PORTLAND, Ore. -- A stabbing victim was trying to walk to the hospital when a Good Samaritan stepped in and helped him.Jeff Kopkin said the injured man stumbled toward him on the sidewalk at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday."And I could see the whole front of his shirt was just caked in blood," Kopkin said. "He lifted his shirt to show me and it had looked like it had dried and (he) said it had happened when it was dark."Kopkin said the injured man told him he had been out drinking, got into a fight and was stabbed in the stomach near the Safeway grocery store on Southeast 39th Avenue and Powell Boulevard.Instead of calling for help, the stabbing victim was apparently walking to the hospital."And I said, 'It's quite a ways.' He was planning on walking, so I just kind of stopped him and talked to him," Kopkin said.Kopkin's wife then called 911 and brought the man a blanket.Josh Lockerby lives nearby and said police and paramedics filled the street near Southeast 52nd Avenue and Tibbits Street."And about a half dozen cruisers showed up along with a fire truck and an ambulance," Lockerby said. The victim was taken to the hospital and police said he suffered a non-life-threatening stab wound to the stomach.Kopkin said he was glad to help."I was just kind of drawn to do something," he said.Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call Portland police.
