Adelman's Son Found Guilty Of DUII

David Adelman, the coach of Lincoln High School's boys basketball team and the son of NBA coach Rick Adelman, was found guilty of drunken driving Monday.

A judge rejected defense motions that Portland police did not have probable cause to stop Adelman for failing to signal, which led to his arrest on drunken driving charges in February. The judge also refused to throw out the result of Adelman's Breathalyzer test, which was 0.14 percent.

Adelman and his defense attorney agreed to let the judge decide the case.

"The state has established its case. Met its burden of proof. So, Mr. Adelman, you are found guilty of driving under the influence of intoxicants," said Judge Jerome La Barre.

School officials said Adelman's conviction won't affect his coaching job because the district's policy regarding off-duty behavior was not in place in February. All coaches signed a special code of conduct that said their actions on and off campus could affect their jobs.

Adelman's current contract runs through the end of this year and still stands, district officials said.

Brad Stanford, a Lincoln parent, agrees with the school's decision.

"It's fair that he be given the chance to finish out the year and then they can re-evaluate then," Stanford said.

"It's not a good thing for the kids, but (it's) his own private life," said Sam Mallett, a grandparent of a Lincoln player. "He has to deal with it himself."

This is the second drunken driving case against Adelman. The first was in 2005 in Washington County.

One concerned parent who did not want to be named said Adelman should not continue as the head of the Lincoln boys basketball program.

"I don't think he should be able to coach and I think he needs to be a good example to kids and that's not being a good example," the parent said. "He needs to be held accountable."

Adelman will be sentenced Dec. 8.
