OREGON CITY, Ore. -- A parking meter officer in Oregon City is facing aggravated-theft and computer-crime charges after used vehicle advertisements on the Internet turned out to be phony, deputies said.Gary Anthony Stewart was arrested Monday after an investigator for Key Bank contacted the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office about a pickup truck listed for sale on Craigslist.Deputies said a Key Bank account belonging to Stewart had received four electronic wire transfers for just under $10,000 in the same day.One victim told investigators she wired $9,700 for a 2006 sport utility vehicle before her bank in Washington state informed her the Internet ad was fraudulent.Stewart made a $6,000 withdrawal in West Linn on Nov. 25, deputies said, and also attempted to withdraw $18,000 at a Key Bank in Oregon City and $15,000 at a Key Bank in Milwaukie. The Key Bank investigator placed a hold on Stewart's account so money could not be withdrawn, according to the sheriff's office.Deputies said they have identified all of the out-of-state victims. They credited the Key Bank investigators with stopping the victims from losing almost $40,000.Deputies said the 40-year-old Stewart has worked for Oregon City for two years as a civilian code enforcement officer for parking meters.Stewart was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on Tuesday night. He's expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.
