A bomb scare caused the evacuation of Salem's city hall Friday afternoon.

Court staff at the Salem Civic Center found two briefcases left in the Municipal Courtroom shortly after 4 p.m.

They notified police, who then evacuated offices in the eastern half of the Civic Center as a precaution.

The Salem police bomb squad X-rayed the cases, which were found to contain business supplies.

Employees were allowed to return to their offices at 5:30 p.m.

No street closures were necessary during the evacuation, police said.
