Neighbors Say Blast Rattled Windows

The bomb squad was called after a homemade explosive device detonated in a Kelso home Thursday evening, police said.

The explosion knocked out a wall in a triplex and forced neighbors to evacuate around 6:20 p.m.

The Portland police bomb squad and officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are investigating. They believe a man set off the device in his kitchen.

No one was injured in the blast.

Nick Groff, who lives nearby, said the explosion rattled windows.

"Yeah, you could feel it like an earthquake before you actually heard it," Groff said.

Neighbors said the man who lives in the home where the explosion occurred is known to make and set off homemade firecrackers.

"This has been going on for six to eight months over here. These guys, on a regular basis, are blowing stuff up over here," he said.

The man who set off the blast has not been cited or charged.
