Powell Butte Trail Still Safe After Vandalism

Vandals struck a popular park in southeast Portland recently, parks officials said Monday.

Large boulders were tagged with graffiti and two rocks were dislodged at the Powell Butte Trail near Southeast Holgate Boulevard and 136th Avenue.

A crew examined the area to see if the rocks were in danger of falling because a popular hiking trail is located at the base of the boulder pile, according to Portland Parks and Recreation representatives.

Officials said the trail is safe for runners and dog-walkers, despite the damage caused by vandals.

"It bothers us. However, I will say that it's pretty rare," said Pat Kreipe, who lives nearby. "We've been here for three years. This is the first time that has happened, but it is sort of a gathering place for kids."

The city said they're evaluating how to repair the damage and how much it will cost to fix it.
