A southeast Portland man driving on Interstate 205 struck a car Tuesday and then kept driving, leaving two injured people to crawl out of their car on their own, state police said.

Troopers said they arrested 30-year-old James Tomlinson IV on charges of driving under the influence, hit-and-run and assault.

Witnesses reported Tomlinson driving his Honda on the inside shoulder and median, weaving in and out of traffic and almost striking another car on I-205 southbound near Oregon City about 4 p.m., police said.

Oregon State Police said Tomlinson's car eventually struck the left rear of a car driven by 60-year-old Mark Kay, of Wilsonville.

Kay lost control and his car went airborne before coming to rest on its side off the freeway, police said.

While Tomlinson's car was damaged, he kept driving, police said, until a mechanical problem stopped his car a half-mile down the freeway. A Clackamas County deputy detained Tomlinson and he was booked into the Clackamas County Jail.

Kay and his wife were able to crawl out from their overturned car. They were eventually taken to Meridian Park Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Six different agencies were called to the scene of the incident.
