A jury has recommended the death penalty for a man convicted of killing a Bethany woman and her two sons.

The jury members' decision to send Ricardo Serrano to death row was unanimous and their death penalty recommendation is expected to be finalized by a judge next week.

In late February, a jury found Serrano guilty on 10 counts of aggravated murder in the 2006 shooting deaths of 37-year-old Melody Dang and her two sons, ages 15 and 12.

Investigators said Serrano suspected Dang's live-in boyfriend was having an affair with his pregnant wife.

The slayings happened the night of Nov. 3, 2006, while Dang was on her cell phone with a Florida man she met on the Internet, according to court records. That man called 911 after hearing a commotion on the other end.

Serrano was arrested three weeks later.

Earlier in the investigation, a Nike representative said Dang’s boyfriend, Michael Nguyen, worked with Serrano’s wife.

Velma May, the victims' neighbor, said the sentence was unexpected.

"I'm surprised the death penalty came down in Oregon," May said. "I'm not totally pro-death penalty, but I can understand it in certain circumstances. Whether this particular crime warranted it, it's not for me to say."
