A local Web site offers a crime solution for the hundreds of people a year whose bikes are stolen.

Christian Gunther said thieves took his bike from downtown Portland a few weeks ago. Although he thought the bike was long gone, he posted a stolen bike alert on bikeportland.org.

According to Gunther, someone brought the bike in to a Sellwood bike shop for repairs and the shop owner recognized it from the Web site. The owner called police and Gunther got his bike back.

“I thought maybe there was a one in a million shot that I’d see somebody riding it and they would have left the features that marked it as mine. But that was the best I’d hoped for,” said Gunther.
