Bill Deiz
FOX 12 Traffic Reporter, "The 4 O'Clock News"After working as a Los Angeles Emmy and Golden Mike award winner while a reporter for KCBS TV, and as the nightly news anchor for KCOP TV in Los Angeles, Deiz returned to his home town of Portland just in time to cover the eruptions of the Mt. St. Helens volcano for Channel 6. Deiz and his crew provided many of the first live pictures of the devastation of the May 18, 1980 eruption from a vantage point well inside the red zone.Deiz later worked as a reporter for KPIX TV in San Francisco, and as a news anchor and reporter for KCBS Radio in San Francisco, when it was an all-news station. Many of his reports aired nationally on the CBS radio network. But he was drawn back to Portland, again, and, this time, never left.Deiz got into traffic reporting almost by accident when a Portland radio station, KEX, decided to expand its traffic coverage to include mid-days, and offered Deiz the job. At the time, KEX also provided traffic reports for a local television station, and Deiz soon became a regular on Channel 8's morning news program. He then a fixture for more than seven years, where he pioneered the use of ODOT cameras for traffic reporting, and was the first reporter to relocate his traffic operation to ODOT, where he could broadcast daily, and also be closer to his sources. When KXL radio offered Deiz the opportunity to establish its own local traffic reporting operation, Deiz jumped at the chance, and soon began to team with FOX 12's Tony Martinez on the KXL morning news. The duo went on to win the Associated Press award for best traffic reporting at a radio station. At about the same time, FOX 12 began its 4 p.m. news program and offered Deiz the job as its afternoon traffic reporter. Deiz personally selects the ODOT camera shots as they air and he works hard to highlight freeway trouble spots to warn FOX 12 viewers. Deiz is married with two sons, both of whom attend Pomona College near Los Angeles. He is "hooked" on Portland, and he and his family have lived in the Alameda area for more than two decades.
