Glendale, AZ -- (Sports Network) - Kurt Warner threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns on 19-of-30 passing and Larry Fitzgerald had five receptions for 130 yards and a pair of scores, as the NFC West champion Arizona Cardinals defeated Seattle, 34-21, in the final game for Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren. Edgerrin James had 14 carries for 100 yards for Arizona (9-7), which will host the Atlanta Falcons next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (et) in an NFL wild card game. The Cardinals will be hosting their first playoff game since 1947, when they were based in Chicago. "I definitely needed to play well and to win was a bonus on top of that," said Warner. "I just think we needed to get back playing with energy and I think we did that to a large degree today." The Cardinals secured their first winning season since 1998, their last playoff appearance. It's just the second time since 1984 they've ended above .500. Holmgren finished 86-74 as Seattle's head coach in the regular season and 4-6 in the postseason. Former Falcons head coach Jim Mora, Jr. will take over for Holmgren in 2009. "Of course I would have liked this season to have gone better," said Holmgren. "We were injured and so it didn't." Holmgren took over as Seattle's general manager and head coach prior to the 1999 season and promptly guided the Seahawks to an AFC West title and their first playoff appearance since 1988. Though they were eliminated by Miami in the wild card round, Holmgren would go on to lead the Seahawks to the postseason in five of the next eight campaigns, including a Super Bowl appearance following the 2005 season. "They mean a lot to me," said Holmgren of his players. "People have been so nice to us in Seattle. They've been great. I got in this originally wanting to gain the respect of my peers. It's very important to me. That has been fulfilled in the last few weeks." Seneca Wallace connected on 24-of-43 passes for 250 yards with a pair of scores and was picked off twice for Seattle (4-12), which also got 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns from wide receiver Deion Branch. Seattle scored first on a T.J. Duckett one-yard touchdown run with 7:32 left in the opening quarter following a fumble recovery by Josh Wilson at Seattle's 36-yard line. A Fitzgerald 50-yard catch to the Seattle 18 keyed a four-play series that led to a 16-yard touchdown catch by tight end Jerheme Urban to tie the game with 5:45 left in the second quarter. Later in the second, defensive back Ralph Brown recovered a Seattle fumble by running back Maurice Morris and advanced it to the Seahawks' 12 yard line. Two plays later Fitzgerald caught a Warner five-yard scoring pass with 4:23 left in the second quarter. Seattle answered with a 30-yard touchdown strike from Wallace to Branch with 1:17 to go in the half. The Cardinals struck first in the third quarter when Warner hit Fitzgerald with a 38-yard touchdown pass with 8:43 remaining. The catch put Fitzgerald over 100 yards for the game, his seventh such game of the year. Arizona made the score 28-14 on a 14-yard Steve Breaston catch with 1:16 to play in the third quarter. The Seahawks narrowed the score to 28-21 on a three-yard scoring pass from Wallace to Branch with 12:04 remaining in the contest. Neil Rackers kicked field goals of 23 and 32 yards later in the fourth quarter.Game Notes:The Cardinals lead the series with the Seahawks, 11-9, breaking a deadlock in the series with a 26-20 road victory in week 11. Holmgren has an 8-6 record against Arizona in his career, with all of those games coming during his tenure with Seattle. The Cardinals' Ken Whisenhunt is 3-1 against both Holmgren and the Seahawks as a head coach, and was the offensive coordinator on Pittsburgh's Super Bowl win over Seattle following the 2005 season. The Cardinals outgained Seattle 457 to 330.
