Clinton Challenges Obama To Oregon Debates

Hillary Rodham Clinton challenged Barack Obama on Wednesday to two debates in Oregon in the run-up to the state's May 20 primary.

But Obama's campaign called Clinton's challenge "an old, Washington game."

Clinton, who won a victory over Obama in Pennsylvania on Tuesday but still trails overall, said Oregon voters deserve a chance to hear both candidates debate on the "real issues" facing the state.

In a statement released Wednesday, Sen. Clinton proposed two debates, including one on the challenges facing rural Oregonians.

But Nick Shapiro, the communications director for the Obama campaign in Oregon, said Obama's focus is on "meeting directly with Oregon voters about the issues that really matter to them."

"There have been 21 Democratic debates and four one-on-one debates with Senator Clinton, all televised nationally," Shapiro said in a press release.

Former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to campaign for his wife, Hillary, during appearances in Oregon on Friday and Saturday.

“I know a lot of Democrats are excited that their votes will finally count in a presidential primary, and I am honored to be one of your choices.

“Oregon deserves just as much attention - and just as much information to make your decision - as New Hampshire, Iowa, and Pennsylvania.

“Since the Pacific Northwest hasn't had a single presidential debate, I am proposing today that Oregon host two Democratic debates, including one specific debate on the challenges facing rural Oregonians.

“I encourage Oregonians to pay attention in the weeks ahead; to see how Senator Obama and I address the issues that people in Oregon care about. Debates about real issues -- Oregon issues -- are good for the state and healthy for our democracy.

“Here is my starting point for the debate - a new Oregon Compact, my promise to the state, that when I am your president, you will no longer have a roadblock in the White House, you will have a partner.

“My compact is made up of some of the most important ideas I’ve heard from Oregonians about how the President should work with you in promoting Oregon’s values.

“Under our compact, we will bring good-paying jobs in green energy and sustainable practices to Oregon.

“Under our compact, we will work side-by-side on providing universal health care.

“Under our compact, we will stand together for Oregon's National Guard members and Oregon's veterans, improving their benefits and quality of care.

“And under our compact, we will work to permanently protect old growth forests and special places like Mt. Hood, while finally putting thousands of people back to work thinning the choked forests that poses a severe fire threat to both forests and communities.

“You deserve to hear from both candidates on these important issues. And I look forward to continuing this conversation. And I hope that Senator Obama agrees – Oregon deserves nothing less.

“Thank you all very much.”

“This is an old, Washington game. There have been 21 Democratic debates and four one-on-one debates with Senator Clinton, all televised nationally. Senator Obama's focus is on meeting directly with Oregon voters about the issues that really matter to them – like jobs, ending the war in Iraq, combating climate change, and making health care affordable for all Americans.”
