Some Athletes Star In TV Shows, Movies, Too

From Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, to Shaquille O'Neal in "Kazaam," take a look at some celebrities that have starred both in sports and on screen.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won a record six NBA MVP awards while playing with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers during his 20-year career. While living in L.A., Abdul-Jabbar dabbled in acting. He made his movie debut in 1978 in "Game of Death." He also appeared in "Airplane!" in 1980.

Jim Brown: While competing as a running back for the Cleveland Browns from 1957-65, Jim Brown tallied 12,312 yards and 126 touchdowns. His efforts earned him three NFL MVP honors and nine Pro Bowl selections. Brown began his acting career in 1964 when he starred in "Rio Conchos." He then went on to play in "The Dirty Dozen," "?tick?tick?tick," "100 Rifles," "Three the Hard Way," "Take a Hard Ride," "One Down, Two To Go," "Original Ganstas" and "On the Edge."

Rick Fox: Former NBA player Rick Fox has made a name for himself as a basketball player and an actor. The former Boston Celtics and L.A. Lakers player had roles in the movies "Eddie," "He Got Game" and "Blue Chips." He also appeared on television in the HBO series "Oz," and had guest roles on shows including "One Tree Hill," "Shark" and "Ugly Betty."

Sonja Henie: Norway's Sonja Henie, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in ladies' figure skating from 1928 to 1936, was also one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. Some of her movies include "One in a Million," "Thin Ice," "Happy Landing," "My Lucky Star" and "Everything Happens at Night."

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson: Former professional wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson gained a fan base while participating in the World Wresting Entertainment (WWE). After acting in his first leading role in "The Scorpion King," Johnson went on to star in several movies, including, "Be Cool," "The Game Plan," "Gridiron Gang," "Doom" and "Get Smart."

Michelle Kwan: Michelle Kwan ruled American figure skating, winning nine U.S. crowns, five world championships and two Olympic medals during her career. Off the ice, Kwan had guest roles on "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," "Arthur," and "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch." She also provided one of the voices in Disney's "Mulan II," and appeared as an announcer in "Ice Princess."

Tara Lipinski: Tara Lipinski skated her way into the hearts of Americans when she won gold in ladies' figure skating at the 1998 Nagano Games. But her star power didn't stop there, as she also dabbled in acting. Lipinski starred in guess roles on sitcoms such as "Malcom in the Middle," "7th Heaven," "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" and "Still Standing." She also had a supporting role on "Young and the Restless" and played in the television movie "Ice Angel" in 2000.

Shaquille O'Neal: The 14-time NBA All-Star has starred on the basketball court, winning three NBA titles and earning accolades that include the 2000 NBA MVP, the 1992-93 Rookie of the Year and being named the MVP of the NBA finals three times. On the movie set, O'Neal has acted in "Blue Chips," "Kazaam," "Good Burger," "Steel," "He Got Game," "The Wash," "Freddy Got Fingered" and "Scary Movie 4."

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Before he was the governor of California and a Hollywood action movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a champion bodybuilder. Nicknamed "The Austrian Oak," Schwarzenegger was a seven-time Mr. Olympia winner. He made his acting debut as Hercules in "Hercules in New York." His other early works included "The Long Goodbye" and "Stay Hungry." He then went on to play in movies that included "Pumping Iron," "Conan the Barbarian," "Conan the Destroyer," and "The Terminator" series. Some of his other notable films include "Predator," "Last Action Hero," "Twins," "Kindergarten Cop," "Commando," "The Running Man," "True Lies" and "Collateral Damage."

O.J. Simpson: On the football field, O.J. Simpson was known as an outstanding player. While playing with the Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49ers, Simpson was a six-time Pro Bowl selection, a five-time All-Pro selection, and the 1973 NFL MVP. Off the field -- and before his slew of legal troubles -- Simpson dabbled in acting. The NFL player had roles in the television mini-series "Roots," and motion pictures including "The Cassandra Crossing," "Capricorn One," "The Klansman," "The Towering Inferno," "Back To The Beach" and "The Naked Gun" trilogy.

Carl Weathers: While he is best known for his role as Apollo Creed in "Rocky," Carl Weathers was a professional football player before he began his acting career. After playing at San Diego State University, Weathers played briefly as a linebacker with the Oakland Raiders. He also played for the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League. Weathers also acted in "Force 10 From Navarone," "Predator," "Action Jackson" and "Hurricane Smith," and appeared in "Arrested Development."

Johnny Weissmuller: Before he was swinging from trees as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller was making waves as a gold-medal winning swimmer. Weissmuller won five Olympic gold medals, three at the 1924 Paris Olympics and two at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. He won 52 national titles and set 67 world records during his career. Weissmuller's acting career took off when he was cast as Tarzan in "Tarzan the Ape Man." He went on to film 12 Tarzan movies. He also starred in the "Jungle Jim" series.
