NFL Game Summary - New England At Buffalo

POSTED: 10:40 pm PST December 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - LaMont Jordan ran for a touchdown and Stephen Gostkowski kicked two field goals, as the New England Patriots beat Buffalo, 13-0, but were eliminated from postseason contention later in the day and were kept out of the playoffs despite an 11-win season.

In order to capture their sixth consecutive AFC East crown, New England needed the Jets to knock off Miami at the Meadowlands or could have made the playoffs if Baltimore lost at home to Jacksonville. Instead, the Dolphins won, 24-17, to capture the division, and the Ravens hammered the Jaguars, 27-7.

It was a lost season for the Patriots, one year after running through the regular season unbeaten before faltering to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. This season, despite an injury to star quarterback Tom Brady, New England finished in double-digit victories, but became the first 11-win team to miss the playoffs since Denver did it in 1985.

Sammy Morris gained 85 yards on 24 carries and Jordan finished with 64 yards on the ground for the Patriots (11-5), who notched their first whitewashing since a 35-0 drubbing of Green Bay on November 19, 2006 and have won the last 11 meetings with Buffalo.

Matt Cassel completed 6-of-8 passes for 78 yards in New England's fourth straight victory overall as the Patriots overcame fierce winds to win.

"It's been a satisfying year," said Cassel. "I didn't know how this year was going to go when it all started. I stepped into this role and I had some big shoes to fill."

Trent Edwards connected on 14-of-25 passes for 128 yards and Fred Jackson amassed 136 yards rushing for the Bills, who finished with a 7-9 record for a third consecutive season under head coach Dick Jauron.

"It's very disappointing end to what turns out to be a disappointing year for us," said Jauron.

New England drew first blood as Gostkowski drilled a 33-yard field goal with 3:01 remaining in the first quarter, and Buffalo looked to answer on the ensuing drive, marching to the Patriots 28-yard line. But the troublesome winds feasted on Rian Lindell's 47-yard attempt, forcing the ball to sail wide right less than four minutes into the second frame.

The Patriots got the ball back at their own 37 and ran it 13 consecutive times, including a seven-yard scramble by Cassel on 4th-and-5 from the Buffalo 35. New England eventually advanced to the eight-yard line, where Gostkowski came on to kick a 26-yarder, normally an easy task. However, the winds continued to cause havoc and, after a temporary delay to re-align the crooked goalposts, the third-year pro watched as the ball travel wide right, and the 3-0 margin stood at halftime.

Buffalo turned the ball over on its first series of the second half and New England capitalized. On 2nd-and-9 from the Bills 49, Edwards lost the handle while being taken down by Jarvis Green and Mike Vrabel recovered the fumble at the Buffalo 43.

The Patriots then put together an impressive 11-play drive that featured a pair of fourth-down conversions, including a 12-yard strike from Cassel to Wes Welker, who was tackled at the two, on 4th-and-5. Jordan banged it in on the next play to give New England a 10-point edge with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter.

Gostkowski added a 23-yarder early in the final frame and Buffalo marched into New England territory on its next two possessions, but ultimately turned the ball over on downs both times.
