Oregon's high school basketball championships will return to Portland in 2010 after a five-year stint in Eugene, OSAA announced Monday.

The final eight 6A girls teams and the final eight 6A boys teams will compete for state titles March 10-13 at the Rose Garden. It will be the first time that the boys and girls state championship games are held at the same site.

OSAA executive director Tom Welter said 39 of the 46 6A schools are located between Portland and Salem, which factored into bringing the boys tournament back to Portland.

"I'm convinced these tournaments need to be in Portland," Welter said in a news release. "This move not only places our events in a NBA facility and the best basketball arena in the state, it also will result in considerable savings in travel, meals and lodging costs for schools."

In 2004, the boys state basketball tournament moved to McArthur Court in Eugene as part of a multi-sport, multi-year agreement with the University of Oregon. Prior to that, the games were held at Memorial Coliseum.

The 6A girls tournament has been held at the Chiles Center since 1983, but the University of Portland building is no longer available during the OSAA's dates.
