Oregon Ducks running back LaMichael James pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of harassment in connection with an incident last month at a Springfield apartment complex.

A judge sentenced James to 10 days in jail and 24 months on probation after he changed his plea to guilty in a Eugene courtroom. Other charges were dropped as a result of the plea change.

But the Ducks' star most likely won't spend any more time behind bars because he was credited with two days of jail time from his arrest. The remaining eight days will probably be served on work release due to jail overcrowding.

James was originally arrested Feb. 15 on two counts of assault and two counts of physical harassment -- charges that stemmed from an allegation that he grabbed his girlfriend's neck during an argument and pushed her.

In a statement Friday morning, James apologized to the victim and said he accepts responsibility for his actions.

"I am also sorry that she has been treated by some people as though she deserved blame for this," James said in the statement. "She does not. I ask people to treat her with respect. She has not done anything wrong."

James also said he looks forward to demonstrating that he's "a better man than recent events suggest."

"I hope to put this matter behind me and now learn from it," he said. "I have made a mistake and accept the consequences."

Jodee Scott, the victim's attorney, said her client is satisfied with the plea agreement.

"My client did not want to ruin Mr. James' life, but did want him to be held accountable for what he had done, to get the help that he needs, so that this does not happen again to someone else and to be protected in the future," Scott wrote in a statement.

Oregon Ducks football coach Chip Kelly suspended James for the opening game of the season and said he must follow a plan put in place by the coach staff in order to play again.

James was a critical player in the Ducks' run to the Rose Bowl game in 2009.He ran for a Pac-10 freshman record 1,546 yards.

His teammate, quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, will appear in court Friday to be arraigned in a burglary case. Former wide receiver Garrett Embry is also expected to be formally charged in the case.
