Mark Ross is a sports and news anchor/reporter for Fox 12. He was born in Denver and grew up in beautiful Albuquerque, N.M.

"It has a lot in common with Portland," Mark said of Albuquerque. "Both cities are full of outdoor activities, energetic, engaging people and have gorgeous scenery."

Mark's broadcasting career began in college, when he convinced the ABC affiliate in El Paso and southern New Mexico to put him on the air for morning sports segments. He joined the staff, won the first two of his three Associated Press Awards in 1997, and then accepted the position of sports director at KGNS-TV, the NBC station in Laredo, Texas.

Mark created promos, long-form specials and innovative programming for the station and covered the NBA Finals. He produced and anchored memorable specials such as the Halloween edition of Friday Football Fever, where a "haunted" set and anchors in costume delivered the highlights, and a series where the station's toy helicopter traveled the state to bring viewers highlights from out-of-town games.

Mark also learned how to live with 70 days in a row of 100-degree-plus heat. "Ugh", Mark said.

Having sweated enough, Mark moved to Midland, Texas, and covered an outstanding local sports scene. Mark's station, KMID-TV, broadcast live high-school football, and minor league baseball games. Mark did play-by-play and color commentary, as well as anchoring and reporting sports segments, specials and a weekly, live, half-hour high-school football show. Mark created, produced, directed and acted in a series of hilarious segments featuring athletes and local celebrities.

"We had the sheriff of Midland County in a parody of "Cops," Mark said. "And got the state champion football team to do a takeoff on "Summer Lovin" from "Grease" -- 'Summer practice, havin' a blaaast ... summer practice, we're runnin' so faaaast.' All over town, people asked me, 'How did you get them to do that?'"

He also engaged in coverage of hard news and has covered presidential elections and inauguration ceremonies.

In 2002, Mark moved to Oklahoma City and Fox affiliate, KOKH-TV to report on the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys. Mark covered several national championships, Big 12 title games, the Final Four and memorable Rose and Sugar Bowls. He also expanded his news reporting duties and covered just about every kind of story from terrorism, economic stories, severe weather, gas prices, spot news, fires, crime and more. Mark then moved to Dallas, where he covered the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Rangers, Big 12 universities and the PGA, among other sports treasures. He worked for the NBC affiliate, Fox Sports Net, and KDAF-TV while in North Texas.

In August 2007, Mark was thrilled to accept his position with the Fox 12 News team in Portland.

Mark also enjoys video photography and has often shot his own stories. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, basketball, competitive running, cycling, weightlifting, movies and keeping up with friends all over the world. Mark is proud to be fluent in Spanish. He earned his master's degree from the University of North Texas in 2007, on a full scholarship, finishing with a 4.0 grade point average. His undergraduate degree is from New Mexico State University. Mark has family in Albuquerque, N.M., New York City, Southern California and Singapore. He welcomes viewer comments and questions and is reachable at mark.ross@kptv.com.
