911 Caller Reporting Bear: 'I Know This Sounds Weird'

Posted: Updated:

A woman who dialed 911 to report a black bear next to Tualatin Elementary School assured the dispatcher that it was most definitely not a dog.

The bear wandered in fields near the school and its playground for hours yesterday.

Dispatcher: "He hasn't attacked anybody or anything, right?"

Caller: "No. He's running for his life."

As the bear set up in the fields that border the suburban school, school administrators scrambled to notify parents and tell them to keep their children at home for the day.

Dispatcher: "You're sure it's a bear and not a big dog, or anything?"

Caller: "We're sure it's a bear ... Yep, it's a black bear. And he's in the business park now."

Once police arrived at the scene, they surrounded the animal from every angle.  The bear was shot with a tranquilizer dart after it ran across the street and climbed a tree.

Firefighters who specialize in rope rescues were able to safely bring the bear down to the ground. Wildlife experts say the bear will be released back into the wild in the Oregon Coast Range.
