Salem man cited for reckless burning

Posted: Updated:

Salem police have charged a man they said started a fire that spread to his neighbor's home.

Raj Jeya-Pandian has been cited for reckless burning.

Investigators said the 57-year-old used a propane torch to burn weeds at his home on Browning Avenue South on Sunday afternoon.

The flames eventually spread to a bush, which scorched the side of his neighbor's house.

Neighbors told police they tried to douse the blaze with a garden hose until firefighters arrived.

They also managed to get the 92-year-old homeowner out safely.

Damage to the home has been estimated at $15,000 to $20,000.
