Girl's uncle talks about her mysterious death

Posted: Updated:

The uncle of a Sherwood girl says he's devastated about the death of his niece, 11-year-old Cecilia Buckley.

Police say paramedics rushed the girl to the hospital Thursday night after her dad called 911. Her mom was also taken to the hospital shortly after with self-inflicted wounds.

Buckley did not survive and police are treating her death as a homicide.

Her uncle, Omar N'Gadi, is remembering Buckley and her personality. He tells Fox 12 she was an overachiever, honor student, dancer and girl scout.

"She was really a light in this town. She was very bright, very bubbly," N'Gadi said. "She was spectacular."

Police have yet to arrest anyone in the case but say they're continuing to focus on Buckley's family.

"I don't know what to expect. I didn't expect this," N'Gadi said. "Please don't jump to conclusions about what happened because there's a lot of speculation. There are a lot of rumors. It's very hard for all of us."

N'Gadi said he knows nothing about what happened Thursday and hasn't talked to his sister since the evening of his niece's death. He said he lived with the family until April and described them as loving and happy.

Buckley was an only child, N'Gadi said, and there were no signs of problems. He wanted to deliver a message to his niece.

"I'm so sorry your uncle wasn't there to help you when you needed him the most," N'Gadi said. "I know you're looking down on me from heaven right now."

He is planning a candlelight vigil for Buckley but hasn't set a date.
