The decision to head to college before hitting the big leagues has paid off for one Oregon Duck.

Lefty pitcher Tyler Anderson was drafted in the first round by the Colorado Rockies.

The National League team plays in the West Division and used the 20th overall pick to draft the Las Vegas native.

Anderson was drafted back in 2008, right out of high school, in the 50th round by the Minnesota Twins but decided to spend a few years at Oregon.

Anderson is a part of the original class of the new baseball program at Oregon. The school hasn't had an NCAA baseball team since the 1981 season.

The southpaw is only the 2nd player in the program to be taken in the first round. Dave Roberts was taken as the overall number one pick back in 1972.

Following his junior season on the mound, Anderson was named to the Louisville Slugger All-American second team, and was also announced as one of the 30 semifinalists for the 2011 USA Golden Spikes Award.

Anderson received Oregon's eighth All-American honor in program history, and the first since Roberts earned the recognition in 1972.

Anderson was also named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team for the second consecutive season last Tuesday, after completing the year with an 8-3 record, 2.17 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 107 and 2/3 innings on the mound

This year, Anderson also tossed the second complete game of his career, allowing two runs on three hits while fanning nine in the series-opening 4-2 win over Arizona April 21.

His 17 career wins at Oregon tie for third all-time, and Anderson is the first UO pitcher to record back-to-back seasons with at least 100 strikeouts (105, 2010; 114, 2011).

During his career, Anderson averaged 8.77 strikeouts per nine innings.

This is the third time in four years that the Rockies have used their first pick to nab a left handed player.
