Fleet Week begins as ships dock in Portland

Posted: Updated:

The Rose City welcomes thousands of sailors to the Rose Festival for Fleet Week.

Ships from the US Navy, US Coast Guard and Canadian Maritime Forces will dock all day Wednesday and Thursday and be in town along Tom McCall Waterfront Park's esplanade seawall from the Steel Bridge to Salmon Springs Fountain until Sunday.

The USS Lake Champlain, USS Ingraham, USS McClusky, USCGC Active, USCGC Fir, USCGC Bluebell and USCGC Henry Blake are all scheduled to dock in Portland.

Rose Festival and Portland city leaders are asking commuters to be patient. High river levels are forcing more bridge lifts than usual, which could result in longer traffic delays. The Broadway, Steel, Burnside and Morrison bridges will be raised through the day.

TriMet officials say MAX trains and buses will be delayed as well. Riders should plan on 20-minute waits Wednesday and Thursday during the day. Also, MAX trains will not cross the Steel bridge. Shuttle buses will take riders across the Willamette river.

Ship tours are available for free on a first-come basis from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
