Longview industrial plant fire under investigation

Posted: Updated:

Cowlitz County authorities are trying to figure out what caused a fire at an industrial plant.

That fire began around 6:30 p.m. yesterday at the Millennium Bulk Terminal, inside a wastewater treatment building onsite.

Investigators say the burn sent up huge plumes of thick black smoke due to insulation and plastic materials inside.

It took about three hours for crews to put out the fire. Today, Cowlitz County dispatchers released a 911 call placed not long after the fire began.

"The whole place is burning up," said the caller.

"Everybody's out," he told the dispatcher. "We're thinking it's probably in the electrical unit there, but we can't tell because there's so much smoke."

Crews confirmed that a tank containing sulphuric acid was not involved in the fire.

They also did not call for any evacuations of nearby communities.
