Oregon Zoo Names Father Of The Year

Posted: Updated:

The Oregon Zoo is announcing the name of its father of the year with a roar of pride.

Cubby, a black bear, is taking the honor this year. Zookeepers say the decision is because of a special bond Cubby has with a 1-year-old orphan black bear named Takoda. They say even though the young bear did not belong to Cubby, he ended up becoming very protective of him.

This is the first time an "adoptive" parent has been honored as part of the Zoo's Father's Day tradition.

Zookeepers say Takoda arrived at the zoo this past winter from Montana, and that it is unusual for a male black bear to take part in raising a cub.

Cubby and Takoda will receive a special treat from the zoo on Sunday.
