Court papers allege suspect was paid to kill beauty salon owner

Posted: Updated:

A woman accused of killing a Gladstone beauty salon owner was paid money to commit the slaying, according to an indictment filed yesterday in Clackamas County.

Susan Campbell, 54, was arraigned yesterday on a charge of murder. Her trial is set for next month.

She is being held in the death of 54-year-old Debbie Higbee Benton, who was found dead inside her shop, Gladstone Beauty Salon, on May 28.

About one week later, officers arrested Campbell on one count of murder. The new court documents say Campbell "did unlawfully and intentionally, pursuant to an agreement that defendant receive money for doing so, cause the death" of Higbee Benton.

Investigators said Campbell provided hospice-type care for relatives of Higbee Benton's domestic partner, Gladstone police Sgt. Lynne Benton.

Lynne Benton hired an attorney earlier this month after officers served a search warrant at her sister's Troutdale home.

Police didn't release many details about the search warrant because of the on-going investigation.
