Eugene company launches red light traffic app in Portland

A new smartphone app designed to help drivers avoid red lights is now available in Portland.

The Green Driver app was developed by the Eugene software company Green Driver, Inc.  According to the company, the app connects to a city's traffic lights and helps drivers find routes that will avoid red lights.

Company officials said the app has been in use in Eugene for almost a year and Portland is the first major metropolitan area where Green Driver has been deployed.

"We're delighted to see the Portland rollout," Matt Ginsberg, Green Driver CEO said.  "It's great to be part of such an environmentally friendly project - less time at red lights means less idling, less carbon, and more efficiencies throughout the system."

According to the company, the app is free and runs on both iPhones and Android phones.  directions in keeping with Oregon law regarding cell phone use while driving.

Green Driver executives said the app is expected to go live across the state of Utah later this summer.
