A woman tried to sell her three-day-old baby for $500 at a Taco Bell, according to Clark County Sheriff's deputies.
The sheriff's office says a woman called 911 when Heidi Knowles, 36, tried to sell the infant to her at the restaurant Thursday night.
Deputies arrested Knowles at the Kays Motel at 6700 NE Highway 99 later that night.
"Baby was clean and when she put him on the bed for a nap, he was always safely far away from the edges," said Patricia Morris, one of the motel's manager. "She seemed to be taking very good care of him and then… We were surprised."
Patricia Morris said Knowles' father booked her a room at the motel on Wednesday.
She said he told her, "This one's been in trouble before and claimed she was ready to go the right path and make a new life and a new start and he was trying to help."
Oliver Morris, also a motel manager, said he spoke with Knowles' father after her arrest.
"That's what she wanted to do, sell it and leave. Go someplace else start over, that's what she said," he said. "That's what she told her father."
Knowles faces charges of trying to sell a child, a felony.
She was booked into the Clark County Jail under her maiden name, Heidi Gasaway.
Knowles also had outstanding warrants from Benton County, Wash., according to deputies.
The baby was taken into protective custody.
