Timbers Army lends hand in pitch renovation

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Timbers Army turned their energy and enthusiasm from Jeld-Wen Field to southeast Portland's Ed Benedict Park on Saturday.

Dozens of members of the Timbers fan group joined forces with the Portland Parks and Recreation Department to renovate the park's soccer fields in a volunteer renovation project called "Operation Pitch Invasion."

Improvements included cleaning irrigation heads, replacing nozzles, adjusting sprinkler heads to grade, minor turf repair and filling in low areas.

"Years ago when we thought MLS was coming to Portland, we thought 'What if there really were as many Timbers Army as we hoped there would be?' What would we do with that energy?" said organizer Shawn Levy. "And this is what we chose to do. This is something we can do no matter how big we are."

Portland Parks & Recreation staff were on hand to lead the project, train volunteers, oversee the work and do quality control.  PP&R also provided all needed tools and materials.
