I-84 eastbound reopens after 15-hour closure

Posted: Updated:

A tanker truck crash two miles east of Multnomah Falls on Sunday shut down lanes of Interstate 84 for 15 hours.

Oregon State police say the truck driver, 31-year-old John Rollins Jr., of Portland, suffered minor injuries in the wreck, which happened at about 5 p.m.

Rollins, a driver for Western Hyway Oil, was unable to stop his tanker truck and semitrailer from travelling off the right shoulder of I-84 eastbound. The truck slammed into a guardrail, damaging about 500 feet of railing as the truck and trailer rolled onto its side.

The truck came to rest, blocking the eastbound lanes, while the trailer overturned on the other side of the railing.

The truck and trailer contained 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline. A fire department official says the tanker was leaking about one gallon of fuel per minute.

A hazmat crew responded to help handle the leak, while police shut down the freeway for an extended period of time.  Deputies with the Multnomah County Sheriff's office urged drivers to avoid I-84 eastbound from Portland because traffic was at a standstill.

The freeway finally reopened at 8 a.m. Monday.
