The Dalles doctor charged with sex abuse involving patients

Posted: Updated:
THE DALLES, OR (KPTV) -

An anesthesiologist from The Dalles is in jail after two of his former patients came forward, claiming he molested them while they were sedated.

Last week, police arrested Dr. Frederick Field on charges of sexual abuse. One of his alleged victims says Field sexually abused her in the fall of 2007. After that case became public, another woman came forward saying Field did the same to her in February of this year. That woman was in court for Field's arraignment on the new charges Monday. She asked the judge to keep Field locked up.

She said, "I don't believe that he should be on a smaller bail. I don't sleep right now. I can't imagine what it would be like if I knew that he was not in here."

Investigators think Dr. Field molested the women at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center while they were sedated for surgery. But one surgeon who used to work closely with Field at the hospital says he is in disbelief. The surgeon, who we're calling Dr. "Smith", wants to remain anonymous.

"I was shocked," said Smith.  "I was absolutely disappointed and I thought they have a lot of rotten people up there, but this was one of the good guys."

Smith is also puzzled by the accusations. With the number of people around a patient before, during and after surgery, he said he can't imagine when Field could've abused anyone. Smith thinks there must have been a witness.

Field worked as an anesthesiologist at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center for five years. His wife also works there, they have children and they own a house in The Dalles. FOX 12 stopped by their home for a comment, but no one answered the door.

Field's lawyer argued that he has strong ties to the community, he is not a flight risk and he is not a danger to the community. Ultimately, the judge set his bail at $300,000.

The Wasco County District Attorney said this is an open investigation.  Detectives think there could be more victims.
