Local woman wins national award for making difference

Posted: Updated:

A Tualatin woman is gracing the pages of Glamour magazine for her work to help children with cancer.

Alison Hicks is one of four nationwide winners in the "Best Of You" contest, which honors women for making a difference in their communities.

Hicks' daughter Chelsea died of cancer in 2009.

To honor her daughter's memory and help other kids with cancer, Alison Hicks created the Chelsea Hicks Foundation after Chelsea passed away.

The foundation's programs create special moments for sick children and their families at Legacy Emanuel and Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

For example, Chelsea's Closet gives children the chance to play dress-up by picking out special costumes.

"These kids love to be anywhere but the hospital and if we come up here and play dress up with them it gives them a way to escape, they can be whoever they want to be and really enjoy their time here and have it not be such a scary place," said Hicks.

Hicks is featured in September's issue of Glamour.
