Possum in road leads to crash, power outage in Damascus area

A driver trying to avoid a possum in the road crashed into a telephone pole on Highway 224 just east of Carver this morning, causing a power outage and highway closure.

The crash brought electrical lines down on the car and the road, leaving about 75 homes without power.

State police say 22-year-old Caitlin Golden, of Newberg, west heading west on Highway 224 when she lost control attempting to avoid the possum. Golden's Honda Accord left the highway and sheered off the power pole.

Troopers cited Golden on a violation of failure to maintain a lane of travel.

The crash happened at 11:30 p.m. and the highway was closed for about three hours, police say. PGE crews were still flagging traffic through the area as of 6 a.m.
