An Oregon State Police trooper is recovering from serious, but non-life threatening head injuries, he suffered while trying to change a flat tire.

Investigators told FOX 12 that Trooper Colin Tracy stopped to assist the driver of a van with a flat tire on the shoulder of Highway 20W near Sisters on Friday evening.

After jacking the van up, Tracy slid underneath to access the spare tire secured underneath. It was then the van slipped off the jack and fell onto the trooper.

Before others could stop to help, Erin Smith, the driver, reposititioned the jack to lift the van. Cristina Ortiz, a passenger, lifted up the back of the van and the trooper scooted out.

First responders took Tracy to a Bend hospital where he is being treated for injuries that will require surgery, said OSP Lieutenant Gregg Hastings. He is in serious condition but released today pending future medical treatment.

Tracy has been with OSP for six years. In addition to working as a Patrol Services Division trooper, he is also a member of the OSP SWAT team.
