Mom accused in botched circumcision pleads guilty

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland woman who tried to circumcise her son at home pleaded guilty Monday to criminal mistreatment.

In October, Keemonta Peterson realized she had botched the procedure attempted on her 3-month-old boy and called 911.

The state took temporary custody of her four children last fall, but Peterson has been able to have supervised visits.

In court Monday, the judge OK'd a plea deal Peterson had made with the district attorney.

The prosecutor told the court that Peterson would plead guilty to one count of criminal mistreatment and the other charges would be dropped.

He told the judge Peterson had taken parenting classes and would be able to see her children only under state supervision.

Peterson's attempt to circumcise her baby boy was "an aberration during a down period in her life," according to her defense attorney.

"She's had two psychological evaluations and no one thinks she is a danger to society," said attorney Scott Raivio.

The prosecutor agreed, saying Peterson does not need a prison term beyond the 25 days she has spent in jail.

They noted that doctors had completed the circumcision and the child has no lasting effects from the procedure.

Peterson thanked the judge "just for seeing me for who I was, and giving me a chance to be with my family again."

"You love your children and have absolutely no intent to harm your child.  The good news is that your son is not permanently harmed," Judge Eric Bergstrom replied.

The $500 Peterson posted for bail will be forfeited for court costs.

Peterson will remain on probation for five years and continue supervised visits with her children.
