Explosion rocks Newberg hotel

NEWBERG, OR (KPTV) -

Police said a man suffered severe burns early Thursday morning in an explosion involving drugs inside a Newberg hotel room.

Investigators said Newberg-Dundee police officers were called before 3 a.m. to the Best Western Newberg Inn at 2211 Portland Road.

Police said officers found 29-year-old Christopher Thomas Heidt, of McMinnville, inside the hotel with serious burns. Heidt told authorities he was cooking hashish in the room just before the explosion, officers say.

The force of the explosion blew out the windows of at least one hotel room.

Andrea Marie Goe, 26, of McMinnville, and a 2-year-old girl were sleeping inside the room at the time of the blast, investigators said.

A Lifeflight helicopter flew Heidt to a Portland-area hospital. There is no word on his condition.

Police also sent Goe and the girl to an area hospital, but they were not seriously hurt.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing.

People staying at the hotel said the explosion sounded like a bomb, while others thought a truck had slammed into the wall.

The Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Hazardous Materials Response team later arrived at the hotel to examine the scene.

Many of the hotel's 120 guests are families in town for student registration at nearby George Fox University.

Investigators plan to let those people back in the hotel once the scene is secured.
