Police: Zupan's founder dies following hit-and-run wreck

Posted: Updated:

The founder of Zupan's Markets has died after police say a hit-and-run driver struck him while he was on his motorcycle Monday night in Portland.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death of 66-year-old John Zupan early Wednesday morning.

Zupan had been riding his motorcycle westbound on Northeast Marine Drive when a drunk driver behind the wheel of a Honda Civic crossed the center line and crashed into him, Portland police say.

Officers say 32-year-old Edy Reynoso-Ramirez was speeding, driving erratically and passing other drivers prior to the crash just east of 138th Avenue. The impact of the collision knocked both the car and motorcycle off the road, with the car coming to rest down a steep embankment.

Reynoso-Ramirez fled on foot after the wreck, police say, but was found a few hundred feet away by police and arrested.

Reynoso-Ramirez was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of assault, failure to perform the duties of a driver, driving under the influence and reckless driving.

He could face new charges now that Zupan has died from his injuries.

Zupan started Zupan's Markets in 1975 after working as a produce manager at Fred Meyer. The small chain of grocery stores is still family-owned: Zupan's son Mike now runs the business.

Doug Hays, one of Zupan's friends, says the crash is upsetting.

"A few hours before it happened, we were chatting about his bike, how he was going to fix it up," he says.

While Zupan's Markets employees were not commenting to the media Wednesday morning, delivery drivers at the Burnside location say John Zupan was well-liked by his employees.

"I know he was a wonderful man and he was so good to his people," said Suzie Fine, who delivers flowers to Zupan's."All of his workers. (It's) just terrible."

Zupan's family says well-wishers can make donations to the Emanuel Medical Center Foundation in lieu of flowers.
