Suspicious powder in baggage at PDX was laundry detergent

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An elderly couple traveling from Anchorage, AK, to Phoenix, AZ, had to rebook their flight during their stop in Portland on Saturday after scanners detected white powder in their suitcase.

The powder was in a bag marked "bio-hazard," which was sealed inside another plastic bag. TSA workers were alerted while suitcase was moving on a baggage conveyor belt towards the tarmac. The area of the airport - which is not open to the public - was evacuated while the suitcase was retrieved.

After careful analyzation, the powder was determined to be laundry detergent, which was packed in the suitcase, not by the couple but by a care facility worker in Anchorage.

Although the nation's Homeland Security Department has not officially elevated the terror alert for the anniversary weekend of 9/11, Secretary Janet Napolitano issued a statement urging public vigilance.

The owners of the suitcase were questioned at length by TSA officials.

"They were very thorough," Jane Norton told Fox 12 News as she and her husband headed to the security line to catch the next available Southwest flight to Phoenix.

No flights were delayed as a result of the incident.
