Former Sandy school volunteer arrested for sex abuse

SANDY, OR (KPTV) -

A former elementary school volunteer is behind bars charged with sexually abusing a child from the Oregon Trail School District in Sandy.

On Sunday, police arrested 43-year-old Kenneth Cartlidge on one count of sexual abuse.  They believe he abused an elementary school student, but officials say the alleged abuse happened on a weekend, not during school hours.

Officials say Cartlidge volunteered in the district, primarily at Firwood Elementary school, for two years.  But he has not volunteered this year.

Cartlidge's former roommate Melissa Matthews is stunned by the allegations.  Cartlidge dated Matthews' mother and after the arrest, she says her mom did speak up about past suspicions.

"She said she saw the signs, but it didn't click in her head I guess", said Matthews.

Some parents tell FOX 12 they are upset that district leaders have not sent a letter home or addressed the situation.  But school officials say it is a police matter and they don't want to compromise the investigation.

A district spokesperson says Cartlidge passed a criminal background check before he was allowed to volunteer in school.

Kenneth Cartlidge declined FOX 12's request for an interview.  He is locked up in the Clackamas County Jail.
