Tampering shuts down BNSF rail line

Posted: Updated:

The main BNSF railway was shut down through southwest Washington as authorities investigated tampering along the line from north of Vancouver to Chehalis.

Spokesman Gus Melonas says BNSF personnel discovered the tampering at a dozen locations shortly before 11 a.m. Monday along that 60-mile corridor.

The first incident was reported near the Longview.

Melonas says nine trains, including Amtrak, were stopped for the investigation. Company vehicles escorted some trains after the tracks reopened.

Investigators aren't revealing exactly what was done to the tracks, but Melonas says repairs have been made. Patrols are planned in the area overnight.

It's not clear if the incident is related to the ongoing Longshoremen labor dispute.
