Number of Americans living in poverty hits 51 year high

Posted: Updated:

The number of Americans living in poverty has grown to its highest level in 51 years, and now many are turning to charities for the first time.

Twenty-five percent of women in the Catholic Charities Housing Transitions Program are newly homeless, including Joann McCree.

She says paying off two traffic tickets left her unable to afford rent.

McCree is staying with family until the organization can help her pay for a new place to live.

"I'm really trying, but it has really been rough and it's scary. Ladies, it's scary. It's very frightening to not to have, not to know where you're going to sleep," she says.

To meet the increased demand, Catholic Charities applies for grants and asks volunteers to help fill the gaps.
