Amtrak train hits and kills pedestrian in Woodburn

WOODBURN, OR (KPTV) -

An Amtrak train traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles has hit and killed a pedestrian in Woodburn this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Amtrak says the Coast Starlight train hit the person who had trespassed into a fenced area of the tracks.

"It's kind of emotional, I'm just worried about who it was and how their family is," said witness Eferan Gutierrez.

The accident happened around 3:25 p.m. near the area of Cherry Street and South Front Street in the city of Woodburn.

"It's a little scary to know something can happen like that, and right outside of my house, too," said neighbor Lili Sotelo. "I'm just praying for the person's family. "

Officials say the train was traveling about 45 mph at the time of the accident.

None of the 219 passengers or crew members on board the train was injured.

All rail traffic was stopped for two hours while police investigated the scene.

Neighbors tell our FOX 12 crews that because there is no legal crossing over the tracks for several blocks in the area, many people cross the tracks illegally through the fenced area.

It is not known if that is why the victim was crossing the tracks at the time of the deadly accident. The investigation is ongoing.

Detectives are waiting to release any information about the victim until they notify next of kin Monday.
