Sex offender claims Occupy Portland as address

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police report that one of the residents of the Occupy Portland camp is a sex offender from California.

A police lieutenant says the man registered at the Portland Police headquarters, and gave his local address as ‘Lownsdale Square, Occupy Portland.'

Protesters whom FOX 12 spoke with remained unconcerned that a sex offender may be in their midst.

Police officers continue their strolling patrols of the area, and many occupiers focused on their political message.

"She needs to see what happens when the power structure that be oppresses the people." Jim Schwartz, a nurse from Northeast Portland, says he's been coming down to the occupation every day, and bringing his 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Skylar. "It's our right and our duty to argue against those powers."

Skylar spent some time with other children at the ‘kids village,' a volunteer day care within the camp.

"We have a lot of different activities for the kids during the day time," child care volunteer Julianne Dunn says. "We do arts and crafts. We have some volunteers who come in for some education time, stories."

Most of the adult occupiers are here for political purposes; and one is a registered sex offender.

"He is in Portland from California, and he listed his address as ‘ Lownsdale Square, Occupy Portland,'" Said Portland Police Lieutenant Robert King.

King says the man registered with detectives as Raymond Allen Curtis, 32, and is complying with the law by checking in with Portland Police.

"It doesn't concern me, ‘cause I lived in Southeast Portland where there's one in every corner and every house anyways," Julianne Dunn says. "You never know when you could be attacked wherever you're at. So you have to be aware of your surroundings."

Surrounded by City Hall, the Justice Center and the Multnomah County courthouse, campers are preparing for the second weekend of Occupy Portland.
