Portland family seeks justice for Deandre Newman

Posted: Updated:

A family is seeking justice for a Northeast Portland man shot to death in his own home Monday night. Deandre Newman's, 26, family says they were at home asleep at the time of the shooting and had to be rescued by crews after calling 911.

"He's gone and it just makes no sense, he's gone and it's so hard," said Newman's mother Dora Campbell.

Portland's Gang Enforcement Team was called out to the home on the 6200 block of Northeast 42nd Avenue just before 9 p.m. Monday and continue to investigate the shooting.

Newman's family though, is adamant he has no ties to any gangs.

"We are still in shock," said Newman's fiancee Shanice Taylor. "He loved his family, he loved his kids and this was not gang related at all. An animal took his life and he didn't deserve this."

The family says Newman's sudden loss leaves them with an unbearable pain and the need to search for answers for the two little girls he leaves behind.

"It's a tragedy that it happened while they were home sleeping. It's something that will affect them the rest of their lives," said Taylor.

"I just have been telling my Mom not to cry," said Newman's 9-year-old daughter Missshandrea. "Sometimes when I need to let it out, I let it out. I'm just trying to be strong for my family."

Taylor says Newman was turning his life around, attended PCC for business and lived for his kids.

The family says they are choosing to hold onto those memories and continue to hold out hope his killer is caught and brought to justice.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mark Sponhauer 503-823-0416.

The family has set up a fund at US Bank for Newman's daughters under the "Newman Girls Foundation" for anyone who wants to help
