Hunter accidentally shot near John Day

JOHN DAY, OR (KPTV) -

An accidental shooting during a hunting trip in eastern Oregon sent one man to the hospital.

OSP troopers said William Cearns was hunting elk with his son and his son's friend, Jared Earnest, on Monday near the town of Fox north of Mt. Vernon.

All three men were riding on an ATV driven by Cearns when it lost traction on a snow-covered road, and police said the two passengers got off to lighten the load.

That's when Earnest's rifle went off, striking the ATV before hitting Cearns' lower leg.

He was taken to Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day where he was treated and released.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
