Commissioner on Occupy Portland: "We've reached the tipping point"

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Pressure is mounting inside Portland's city hall to end the Occupy Portland camp in two downtown parks.

"We've reached the tipping point," said commissioner Nick Fish.  "I thought, in fact, we'd reached it earlier. But there's now a consensus in this building that we have reached this tipping point. Now the question is, how do we end this peacefully?"

Commissioners Dan Saltzman and Randy Leonard also would like to see the camp end, members of their staffs confirm.

Commissioner Amanda Fritz said she also has concerns about the current state of the camp.

"We have been very clear all along it's the behavior that matters and it's on a day-by-day basis," she said. "The behaviors are getting worse."

The commissioners said any action will come from Mayor Sam Adams.

Adams and police Chief Mike Reese plan a press conference about Occupy Portland for 10 a.m. Thursday. The city is not saying exactly what they'll be speaking about.

"We are, I believe, in an end game," said Fish.  "The question is, can it end peacefully where the true voices of Occupy Portland move forward and the movement matures and grows outside of a camping contest or not?"

The Occupy Portland movement began Oct. 6 when thousands marched through downtown in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement.  A few hundred Occupy Portland members have been camping in Chapman and Lownsdale Squares since then.

Over the last five weeks, city officials have grown more concerned about health and safety issues. Police overtime costs related to the encampment has risen to $316,000.

On Wednesday, a man was arrested in the camp on suspicion he threw an incendiary device at the World Trade Center in downtown.

Also Wednesday, the Portland Parks & Recreation said they forwarded seven code violation citations to the Occupy Portland camp.  An Occupy Portland media liaison said he could not confirm they've received the citations.
