Starbucks discourages accepting food stamps for Frappuccinos

A loophole in the nation's food assistance program allows participants to use Oregon food stamp cards for Starbucks Frappuccinos, but the coffee giant discourages such sales.

Last week, FOX 12 Investigators discovered the Oregon Trail Card is accepted at Starbucks locations inside local grocery stores as long as the user is buying a cold beverage or an approved food, which includes sweets.

POLL: Should food stamps be allowed at Starbucks counters?

A spokesman with Safeway told FOX 12 the store chain recently made the change as an added convenience to customers.

But Starbucks, a spokesman said, doesn't support the move.

"When this topic arises, Starbucks continues to communicate to our licensees that we do not recommend this practice," a spokesman said in a statement.

Starbucks does not accept food stamp cards at its stand-alone stores.
