Timbers player Futty Danso makes debut with Oregon Ballet Theatre

Hundreds who came out to Keller Auditorium for the Oregon Ballet Theatre's Nutcracker Ballet got a special surprise Wednesday night.

Portland Timbers defender Futty Danso made his debut with the ballet, as part of a group of special community walk-on guest dancers.

"I'm ready for it, I've been working on my dancing moves," said Danso. "Hopefully whenever the dancing comes up, I'm ready for it."

Danso, alongside his administrative assistant Beto Angulo, traded in their jerseys for a more refined look Wednesday.

The two were invited on as "party guests" and performed in the first act of the Nutcracker. Danso was taught his cues and steps just moments before crews raised the curtain on the show.

"I think I'm light on my feet, but I don't know if I'm a good dancer. Maybe if I try, you never know," said Danso.

While he may have had a small role, ballet organizers say it's why he performed that's so important.

"It helps us connect different parts of the community together," said Executive Director Diane Syrcle. "If people can see them on stage and think, 'Oh I love soccer and I love ballet,' how wonderful is that?"

Danso says he was honored to be a part of the Oregon Ballet Theatre's performance of the Nutcracker and would love to do it again.

"I think people will enjoy it," said Danso. "I just want to put on a perfect show and give people something to cheer or laugh about."
