Longview soldier killed in Afghanistan

LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -

Family and friends are mourning the death of a Longview soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Army Specialist Mikayla Bragg, 21, was shot while on duty Wednesday in the country, according to relatives. Her unit was scheduled to leave Afghanistan this weekend, the family said.

"She's just a lovely girl. She was happy she was doing what she was doing serving her country. She was ready to come home in a few days," said her grandmother, Sue Creed.  "She loved her family and her friends, and it's just really hard to believe she's gone."

Bragg was driven and dedicated but also had a goofy side, said her stepmother, Amber Bragg.

"She was just very kind, caring. She would give her shirt off her back if she needed to," said Amber Bragg.  "And if she couldn't find what you needed, by God, she found somebody else who could help you."

Bragg grew up in Longview and graduated from Mark Morris High School in 2008. She joined the Army a few months after graduation to pay for college.

According to post on her mother's Facebook profile, Bragg's body is arriving at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware and will be brought back to Joint Base Lewis-McCord in Tacoma.

Bragg is survived by father Stephen Bragg, Amber Bragg and four siblings in Longview, by mother Sheyenne Leonard Baker, a stepfather, two younger sisters and Creed, of Shelton, WA, and by an older brother, who is also a member of the U.S. Army.

A memorial service will be held in Longview, according to Amber Bragg. Arrangements have not yet been made.
