Accused rapist: 'I never forced anybody to do anything'

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 29-year-old Clackamas man is facing several counts of kidnapping, rape, sexual abuse and unlawful use of a weapon.

Investigators arrested James Murphy in October for sex crimes in Clackamas County, and on Monday, a Multnomah County grand jury indicted him on charges involving new alleged victims.

A 25-year-old Portland woman we are calling Michelle testified before the grand jury last week.

She says she remembers every detail of the day Murphy reportedly attacked her.

"He was really nice, and then he went and parked somewhere else and his mood just totally flipped," Michelle says.

Michelle admits she was prostituting herself on 82nd Avenue last May when Murphy allegedly picked her up.

She claims Murphy offered her money for oral sex but he then raped her in the front seat of his Jeep.

"He started yelling at me and cussing at me and told me he had a knife in the side of his door," she says.

Michelle says she stumbled out of Murphy's car and called police.

Last week, Michelle gave grand jury testimony along with two other women. But during a jail house interview on Monday, Murphy said all of their statements are lies.

"I want the truth to come out, and they don't want that," Murphy says.

Murphy claims the only thing he is guilty of is not paying his prostitutes.

On more than one occasion, Murphy admits that he picked up prostitutes and had sex with them, but then took the money back and kicked them out of his car.

Murphy calls it a huge mistake, but not rape.

"I never forced anybody to do anything," Murphy says. "I tricked them. I told them, 'Can I put the money up here?' and they said, 'Yeah.' Then when we were done, I took it and said, 'Get out of the car.' That's all I did, every single time."

Michelle is pregnant and says there's a good chance Murphy is the father.

She thinks he may have more victims and she hopes they're brave enough to speak out.

"At first, I didn't want to do anything about it and I didn't think the police were going to believe me because of what I was doing," Michelle says. "But you have to come forward, and it really takes the weight off your shoulders."

Murphy is currently locked up in the Clackamas County Jail. His trial is set to begin at the end of January.
