PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
After a quick briefing about 21-year-old Justin Fairfield on Wednesday, the Multnomah County Warrant Strike Team knocked on his parents' door.
Justin wasn't there and his stepfather said he is not welcome.
"I caught him trying to break in to my house. So, why should I?" the stepfather said. "He's up to no good."
The team got a tip that Fairfield is living in a house off of Southeast Ramona Street. They checked it out and found a Portland police officer also watching Fairfield for charges related to recent burglaries and stolen guns.
Detective Todd Shanks pounded on Fairfield's door and warned him to come out.
"Justin! This is the police. We have a warrant for your arrest and we know you're in there," he said.
After 30 minutes at the house and no movement, the strike team backed off. Shanks had a feeling that Fairfield was inside, but they moved on to his girlfriend's house.
Just as they pulled up there, Deputy Matt Adams saw someone running out the back door. The deputies chased and eventually caught him, but he was not Fairfield.
The man's name is Jacob Harris and he is also a friend of Fairfield's girlfriend. Harris is on probation and said he got scared when he saw police and the FOX 12 camera, so he ran.
Harris admitted to Shanks that he used methamphetamine on Tuesday, which goes against the rules of Harris' probation and could have landed him in jail. But Shanks cut him a deal, hoping to get a lead on Fairfield.
"I want you to find him for me and we can act like this whole thing didn't happen today," Shanks said.
The detective gave Harris his business card and told him to call in a few hours with an update.
"He could be going to jail right now on a violation but we're going to give him the benefit of the doubt and hopefully we can find the guy we're looking for," Shanks said.
